back in the USA

it's SO good to be home. i had a fantastic time in England, and a great response to my paper, but it's SO good to be home.

Eve looked just a tad bigger than when i left, but hadn't started walking or anything while i was gone (thank God). she's kicking a lot more now, which is fun, and her neck is much stronger, so she can keep her head straight when she's vertical. right now she's on her little play mat talking to the little lion suspended above her. she seems to really prefer the lion, so the giraffe is getting ignored.

the best thing happened yesterday while i was watching her... she laughted at me! i was smiling at her, so she started smiling really big, which caused me to start laughing, and then she laughed back. it was the cutest thing in the world.. one of the highlights in my life so far. Eve is staring at me whenever she has the chance... i must look funny to her, because my face is fascinating.

life is good. julie's back to work part-time now, so i work from home on thursday afternoon and all day friday. i can only work about half the time while i'm watching her, so will have to make up the extra time during the week.

i'll write more later... gotta get to work.

amy, those poker chips are terrible! ugh! i looked at the t-shirts they sell on that site... i think they're anti-evangelistic. people might actually renounce the faith when they see someone wearing those.

this is more for the socratic club but there are SO many comments on your last post that i dont want to get lost...

in heaven....
will we mourn the loss of those in hell?
will we be recognizable to each other?
do you know of specific scripture that deals with our situations in heaven/hell...

i am asking because i am in a dialogue with a friend of mine on these issues and my theology books are in storage....i need some wisdom! you are like my live-theology book

hi amy,

well, the 'socratic club' blog has turned into the creationism debate blog, so maybe here is a better place for your question anyway.

unfortunately i'd have to answer your questions with a big fat "i don't know". there's really *very* little in scripture about the nature of heaven and hell. It's not in John's Gospel, and Paul doesn't even mention it. And, where Jesus mentions it in the Synoptic Gospels, he doesn't describe it.

The only possible exception is Luke 16, with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus. However, I think that story is more parabolic, so I don't think we can read too much into the descriptions there.

Jesus describes it as a place of fire (e.g. Mt 5:22; Mk 9:43; also Rev. 20:14). On the other hand, we have Matthew's parables in which the condemned are cast into a place of darkness and gnashing of teeth (e.g. Mt. 8:12; 22:13; 25:30). Can we infer anything from this?

Anything I could say in response to your questions would really be a guess. Have you ever read C.S. Lewis's "The Great Divorce"? If not, I would definitely recommend it. It's a story about Heaven and Hell... I like the way he portrays it.
